FORMOSA NEWS - Jakarta - Light Steel Frame Training Improves the Skills of Johar Baru Jakarta Residents. Community service carried out by M. Maria Sudarwani, Sri Pare Eni, Ktut Silvanita Mangani, Setiyadi, Kefin Grardiyan S.D. Siga, and Friska Grezlie Kase from the Christian University of Indonesia, in an article of service published in  the Asian Journal of Community Services edition Vol. 5 No. 2 of 2026 The limited availability of wood, especially teak, encourages the use of light steel as an alternative material for roof trusses. Mild steel is lighter, termite resistant, and more stable. However, without proper training, the installation risks not meeting technical standards.

Direct Education and Practice-Based Training Programs

The UKI team designed the training program in several stages, from preparation to evaluation of the program's sustainability. The approach used combines socialization, discussion, and hands-on practice so that participants not only understand the theory but also be able to apply it independently.

Methods of activity include:
  • Field surveys and identification of community needs.
  • Socialization and education of light steel materials.
  • Workshop on the practice of making light steel roof trusses.
  • Evaluation of participants' work results and program follow-up.

This stage is described in detail in the research methods section that emphasizes the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and society.

Technical training according to national standards

The training material refers to the Indonesian national standard (SNI 8399:2017). Participants are introduced to:

  • Characteristics of mild steel material.
  • Cutting tools and assembly techniques.
  • Frame splicing and mounting methods.
  • Construction work safety procedures.

The training is carried out through presentations and live demonstrations. In the picture of activities on pages 4-5, you can see the socialization session in the village hall and coordination with industry partners. Documentation shows the involvement of the village government, construction companies, and mild steel applicator associations.

Main Results of the Study

This program resulted in a significant increase in the understanding and skills of citizens. Key findings include:

  1. Improved technical knowledge of mild steel materials and installation procedures.
  2. Ability to practice independently in making light steel roof frames.
  3. The formation of a collaborative network between campuses, industry, and the community.
  4. Opportunities for replication of the program in other regions with similar needs.

The researcher emphasized that practice-based training has been proven to be effective in improving people's technical skills in a relatively short time.

Social and Economic Impact on the Community

The program not only provides technical benefits, but also opens up new economic opportunities. The skill of light steel frame installation has a high market value in the construction sector.

The expected impacts include:

  • New job opportunities in construction
  • Increasing the economic independence of the community
  • Strengthening the capacity of the local workforce
  • Potential for continuous training programs

This research also highlights the importance of synergy between universities, government, industry, and society in improving the quality of human resources.
