FORMOSA NEWS - Jakarta Selatan - In today's digital economy, businesses compete not only through products and services but also through the quality of their communication. That is the central conclusion of "The Strategic Role of Communication Science in Building Effective Business Communication Strategies," a peer-reviewed study published in 2026 in the Formosa Journal of Business and Economic Statistics (FJBES). The research was conducted by Elizabeth and Dhika Purnama Putra from Universitas Budi Luhur, Sugeng Karyadi from Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Yunidyawati Azlina from Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika, and Syailendra Reza Irwansyah Rezeki from Politeknik Pariwisata Batam. The authors argue that communication science has evolved into a strategic business discipline that helps organizations build trust, strengthen reputation, navigate crises, and remain competitive in rapidly changing markets.

As organizations face growing competition, digital disruption, and increasingly informed consumers, effective communication has become a business necessity rather than a supporting function. Social media, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms have fundamentally changed how companies interact with customers, employees, investors, regulators, and the broader public. A single misunderstanding or poorly managed public response can spread globally within minutes, making communication strategy an essential component of organizational success.

The researchers explain that communication science provides the theoretical foundation for understanding how people create meaning, interpret messages, and build relationships. Business communication applies these principles in practical settings, enabling organizations to improve productivity, strengthen customer engagement, support organizational culture, and achieve long-term commercial goals. Instead of viewing communication as merely delivering information, the study presents it as a strategic capability that influences virtually every aspect of modern business operations.

Literature-Based Research with a Practical Business Focus

The research adopted a descriptive qualitative approach, relying entirely on secondary data. Rather than conducting surveys or interviews, the authors analyzed books, scholarly journal articles, official reports, policy documents, and other credible academic sources. Through literature review and content analysis, they synthesized existing knowledge to explain how communication science supports effective business communication strategies in contemporary organizations.

This methodology allowed the researchers to examine communication from multiple perspectives while identifying consistent patterns across previous studies. The result is a comprehensive framework that connects communication theory with real-world business practices.

Communication Has Become a Strategic Business Function

The study highlights how business communication has transformed dramatically over the past several decades.

Traditionally, communication inside organizations followed a one-way model, with management delivering instructions to employees and companies broadcasting advertisements to consumers. Today, however, organizations operate in an environment where communication is interactive, transparent, and continuous.

Digital technologies have empowered consumers to influence brand reputation through online reviews, social media discussions, and public feedback. As a result, companies can no longer fully control their public image. Instead, they must actively participate in conversations while maintaining credibility and consistency across multiple communication channels.

The researchers conclude that communication is no longer simply a marketing tool. It has become an essential component of corporate strategy that directly affects organizational sustainability and competitive performance.

Five Strategic Roles of Communication Science

The study identifies five major ways communication science strengthens business communication strategies.

1. Bridging Company Vision and Market Perception

Organizations often develop ambitious visions and innovative products, but those ideas create little value if customers fail to understand them. Communication science helps companies translate complex internal concepts into clear, engaging, and customer-centered narratives that resonate with market expectations.

2. Audience Segmentation and Personalized Messaging

The researchers emphasize that no single message appeals equally to every audience. Businesses achieve stronger results by identifying different customer segments and tailoring communication according to their needs, behaviors, motivations, and preferences. Personalized communication improves engagement, strengthens customer loyalty, and increases marketing efficiency.

3. Reputation Management and Stakeholder Trust

Corporate reputation is built through consistent communication, transparency, and accountability rather than advertising alone. Investors, employees, regulators, customers, and communities evaluate organizations based on how effectively they communicate during both stable periods and challenging situations. Strong stakeholder trust also provides resilience when organizations encounter unexpected difficulties.

4. Crisis Navigation

In the digital era, a customer complaint or misleading rumor can quickly escalate into a major crisis. The study explains that communication science offers practical guidance for responding rapidly, acknowledging problems honestly, maintaining transparency, and rebuilding public confidence after crises occur. Effective crisis communication can transform organizational setbacks into opportunities for learning and institutional improvement.

5. Communication Channel Synchronization

Modern businesses communicate through websites, social media, customer service teams, influencers, advertising campaigns, and traditional media. According to the researchers, maintaining consistent messages across every communication channel is essential for preserving organizational credibility. Contradictory messages can quickly undermine public trust and weaken brand reputation.

Why the Findings Matter

The study offers practical guidance for organizations operating in increasingly competitive and technology-driven markets.

For businesses, the findings demonstrate that communication should be integrated into strategic planning rather than treated as a separate marketing activity. Strong communication practices help organizations improve customer relationships, manage reputation, reduce crisis risks, and create sustainable competitive advantages.

Educational institutions can use these findings to strengthen business communication curricula by incorporating digital communication, reputation management, stakeholder engagement, and crisis communication into management and communication programs.

For policymakers and public institutions, the research highlights the importance of transparent, consistent, and accountable communication in building public trust and supporting effective governance.

A Communication Strategy Built on Human Understanding

The authors conclude that communication science has become the architectural framework that connects organizations with society. Businesses that understand audience behavior, adapt messages to different stakeholders, and maintain consistent communication across multiple platforms are better positioned to survive, grow, and succeed in today's dynamic business environment.

As Elizabeth and colleagues from Universitas Budi Luhur, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika, and Politeknik Pariwisata Batam explain, communication science is no longer simply about transmitting messages. It is a strategic foundation that shapes how organizations build trust, manage relationships, respond to crises, and compete in the digital marketplace.
