JAKARTA — The massive integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fundamentally reshaped the digital marketing paradigm, particularly through the widespread adoption of tailored strategies across e-commerce networks. By utilizing advanced capabilities, digital businesses can now deliver personalized product recommendations, precision-targeted promotions, and highly responsive automated services aligned with individual consumer behaviors. This rapid digital evolution inspired a new scientific study published in 2026 by a research team from Universitas Pakuan, comprising Mita Sicillia, Slamet Ahmadi, and Doni Wihartika. The study deeply evaluates how perceived AI usefulness influences online consumers' purchase intentions within the highly mature digital market of Jakarta.

The deployment of AI in marketing operations has grown from a technological novelty into a strategic business imperative necessary for companies to secure their competitive advantage in a dynamic commercial space. Jakarta presents an advanced level of digital maturity, supported by an established ecosystem where the majority of e-commerce enterprises have been operating since before 2020. However, despite this strong operational readiness, the real-world application of AI still encounters significant barriers, specifically regarding information accuracy, personal data security, and ethical considerations, which frequently cause skepticism among platform users.

To address these consumer behavioral dynamics, the researchers deployed a structured online survey to collect primary data from 400 active e-commerce users across various districts in Jakarta from June 2024 to June 2025. All participants had confirmed experience interacting with automated commercial tools, such as algorithmic product discovery systems or conversational chatbots. The collected datasets were analyzed simultaneously using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to objectively calculate both the direct and mediated relationships between the experimental variables.

The empirical analysis yielded a striking discovery: the functional value or perceived usefulness of AI features does not exert a significant direct effect on consumer purchase intention. In practical terms, shoppers do not automatically decide to buy an item simply because an e-commerce platform utilizes high-tech, intelligent applications. This outcome highlights that technical excellence and computational power, when isolated from emotional considerations, are insufficient to independently drive consumer buying motivations.

Instead, the study confirms a pattern of full mediation, where the positive impact of AI usefulness is transmitted entirely through psychological channels. Consumer trust serves as the primary mediating mechanism, while the reduction of perceived risk functions as a complementary pathway. When smart systems provide consistent, accurate, and valuable shopping recommendations, consumers evaluate the technology as reliable, which progressively builds their trust in the digital platform. Simultaneously, transparent and secure AI interactions successfully mitigate transactional anxieties regarding data leaks and privacy violations, thereby lowering perceived risks and clearing the psychological path for final purchase intentions to materialize.

The strategic implications of these findings offer vital guidance for e-commerce operators and digital marketing practitioners across Indonesia. Commercial success in the digital era depends heavily on a system's ability to cultivate consumer confidence rather than just its computational sophistication. Digital businesses must prioritize transparency in algorithmic processing, offer clear disclosures regarding customer data governance, and maintain highly robust transaction security frameworks. Balancing advanced engineering with trust-centric risk management is the ultimate strategy for converting digital consumer engagement into measurable business growth.
